HA HA HA, sooo true... My girlfriend a while back knew how much I loved Japanese martial arts and how I really wanted to start training again. So her birthday gift to me was going to be a membership to the school of my choice. First stop... Mr. Stickles dojo... Now his place was very nice to look at but unfortunately from the moment my girlfriend and I showed up, the only thing on his mind was getting her to join. He even went as far as trying to impress her with a few fancy throws to some really good uke's. Just to show her some of the things "he guarantied he'd be able to teach her", lol... Needless to say we walked out... That is... Not before we watched him pick his toes while talking to some other woman that was also watching class...

Ps. He does have a nice looking dojo ;-)

All communities have bad apples and, although rare, unfortunately Aikido is no exception. A "less than honorable" instructor should not dissuade anyone from practicing the art and noble principles of Aikido. A reputable Aikido dojo will encourage a healthy, supportive environment for all its students.

ADVICE: When looking for a reputable dojo do your research, visit all the dojos in your area and beyond - because many travel a little further to a dojo that feels right to them rather than settle for the convenience of a sub-standard dojo nearby. Research not just the experience of the head instructor but their credibility and integrity. After that - visit the dojo, meet the instructor/s and watch their classes. Take in the attitude of the students, trust your senses...and above all, if anyone wants you to sign a payment contract...walk out. A reputable dojo does not need contracts to maintain its members.

Joined Aikido Schools NJ a few years ago (after Scott Whaley's dojo closed) and Stickles did nothing but trash Whaley Sensei every chance he got. I left after the first month.

Speaking of Whaley Sensei... anyone know where he's teaching now? I tried searching for an aikido school in Westfield, but found nothing (based on another scam report that said he was "back in a big way" in Westfield)
