I was contacted via e-mail of a "new" way to advertise in place of Adwords. I was provided a link to their website and it has a live demo. I entered my URL into the live demo then entered a keyword in the appropriate box and it supposedly shows you the result. The result is a new window with your URL placed above the search results. Seems cool, but it's just a plugin. I was told I needed a browser upgrade and they conveniently have the link for a browser upgrade on their site. Well, it's just a link to download their plugin so that they can proceed to scam you. The pricing is $995 for 1 keyword and the more you buy the cheaper each keyword is. For 10 keywords it is $595 each. So, you are paying the company to provide a plugin and you advertise to yourself and nobody else.

I found out the hard way and now they won't even return my emails or calls. How can we stop these thieves???

I just had the same email and "test run". He even told me to type in "shipping" and the website for fedex magically appeared. Luckily I did some searches and started to be skeptical when saw they only took checks and not credit cards.
The fedex trick was cool in my office with the guy, Bob, on the phone but it was only due to the plugin they had me download. Once I got home and tried the "shipping" search at home, then the magical fedex website did not pop up. Knew then that it was a scam.
Can't believe this has not become more well known. Let's spread the word so others aren't duped.

Go to www.ic3.gov & report this internet fraud to the FBI and give Bob a nice long vacation in prison.
